Houthi rebels signal openness – end of war in Yemen possible

In Yemen, Shia Houthi rebels openly called for an end to the civil war during a meeting with representatives from Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The head of the Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Maschat, called for a “just and honorable peace,” the rebel-controlled Saba news agency reported on Sunday. According to this information, the two foreign delegations have been in the poorest country of the Arabian Peninsula since Saturday.

The goal is to extend the fragile ceasefire and reach a peace deal, it said. There was initially no comment from Saudi Arabia. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg has been negotiating for some time with the Iran-backed Houthis to find a solution. The rebels control large parts of the north, including the capital Sanaa. They are fighting against the Yemeni government and a military alliance led by Saudi Arabia.

The civil war that has been going on since 2015 has also led to a humanitarian crisis in the impoverished country. A ceasefire brokered by the United Nations expired in October. All attempts to resolve the conflict definitively have so far failed.

In addition to the United Nations, neighboring Oman is also trying to mediate. The rapprochement of two rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran has raised hopes for a breakthrough. By the end of March, the rebels and the government had already agreed on the exchange of nearly 900 prisoners. (sda/dpa)
