At the height of Easter celebrations, Pope Francis celebrated the Great Mass on Easter Sunday in St. Peter’s Square in Rome. The head of the Catholic Church officially presided over the traditional Easter Mass, but it was celebrated by Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. According to the Holy See, about 45,000 faithful gathered in the forecourt of St. Peter’s Basilica to celebrate Easter along with the 86-year-old. The Pontifex observed the Mass largely seated.
To great cheers, Francis was wheeled past the crowd in the popemobile after Mass—many of the faithful shouted “Viva il Papa!” (Long live the Pope). In sunny but cool weather the place was well stocked. On the occasion of the Easter holidays, St. Peter’s Square was decorated with some 35,000 flowers and plants. Tulips, daffodils and roses were draped around the altar.
After the traditional Mass on the main holiday of the Catholic Church, the Pope will later proclaim his Easter message from the middle loggia and pronounce the blessing “Urbi et Orbi”, i.e. the city and the world. (sda/dpa)
