China and Taiwan compete against each other on the water

Taiwan’s defense ministry said Sunday it saw 70 Chinese aircraft, including Su-30 fighter jets and H-6 bombers, and 11 ships near the island. The Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong, which has been monitoring Taiwan since last week, is now conducting exercises more than 400 nautical miles off Taiwan’s southeast coast, Reuters news agency reported.

First offensive exercises against Taiwan

This is the first time China has spoken openly about simulated attacks against targets in Taiwan, Zhao Xiaozhuo of the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences told China’s state-run newspaper Global Times.

The main targets include infrastructure such as airstrips, military logistics facilities and mobile targets “to destroy them in one fell swoop if necessary,” Zhao said in the report.

China began the exercises a day after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen returned from a controversial visit to the US, where she met senior Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress. Beijing sees any interaction between US and Taiwanese officials as a challenge to its claim to the island. (chs)
