Fewer births were registered in the Mediterranean country in 2022 than at any time since the unification of Italy in the 19th century, Italy’s statistical authority Istat announced on Friday. Last year, the birth rate was less than seven births per 1,000 inhabitants, but the death rate was more than 12 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants. Last year, about 393,000 children were born. Italy’s population continues to shrink.
The population of the country, which is experiencing a strong demographic decline, is ageing. The number of people who are at least 100 years old in Italy has reached a new high: according to data from Istat, about 22,000 people are over 100 years old. That is about 2000 more than in 2021. Their number has tripled within 20 years. According to the figures, as many as 58.85 million people lived in Italy at the end of 2022.
