Tourist helicopter crashed over Vietnam’s Halong Bay – fifth victim recovered

Two days after a tourist helicopter crashed over the world-famous Halong Bay in northeastern Vietnam, emergency services have found the body of the last missing passenger. The victim was recovered 30 meters from the scene of the accident, the newspaper “VnExpress” reported on Friday, citing the local army.

The accident happened Wednesday night. Four Vietnamese tourists and the pilot were in the Bell 505 helicopter. They went to admire the bay from the air, with its emerald green waters and thousands of limestone islands rising from it. Halong Bay has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

The bodies of the other prisoners had already been found on Wednesday evening and Thursday. About 300 helpers were deployed to search for the last missing person.

The cause of the crash was still unclear. The wreckage of the helicopter and the black box have since been recovered. This should clarify why the helicopter fell into the water shortly after take-off. (sda/dpa)
