Four people were killed when a tourist helicopter crashed over the world-famous Halong Bay in northeastern Vietnam. According to the Ministry of Defense ambulance service, another woman was missing on Thursday. The accident happened Wednesday night. Four Vietnamese tourists and the pilot were in the Bell 505 helicopter.
They went to admire the bay from the air, with its emerald green waters and thousands of limestone islands rising from it. Halong Bay has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.
Contact with the helicopter was lost nearly 20 minutes after takeoff, authorities said. Moments later he fell into the water. The bodies of two passengers and the pilot were recovered late in the evening. On Thursday, some 300 rescue workers were deployed to search for the two missing persons.
The cause of the crash was initially unclear. The emergency services were still looking for the black box. The Northern Vietnam Helicopter Company, of which the helicopter was part of their fleet, offers 10 to 30 minute scenic flights over Ha Long Bay for prices ranging from 90 to 270 euros. Tourist helicopter sightseeing flights were initially suspended nationwide after the crash, the aviation authority said. (nad/SDA)
