Xi Jinping calls for negotiations in Ukraine conflict

In Beijing on Thursday, after talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, Xi Jinping reiterated China’s position that restraint should be exercised and anything that could aggravate the situation or get out of hand should be avoided. Attacks on civilians or civilian facilities must be avoided. Russia has been waging an offensive war against its neighbor for more than a year.

After a meeting with Macron, Xi Jinping recalled his commitments not to use nuclear weapons. Under all circumstances, the use of biological and chemical weapons and attacks on civilian nuclear installations such as nuclear power plants must be rejected. The head of state and party leader largely reiterated a Chinese position in his statement. He reiterated that “legitimate security interests of all parties must be taken into account”, with Beijing supporting the Russian argument.

Xi Jinping also called for the creation of a “balanced European security framework”, widely understood as a criticism of the US and NATO’s enlargement. As in February’s 12-point paper, Xi Jinping again avoided condemning Russian aggression. Nor did he specify whether China would use its influence over Russian President Vladimir Putin.
