According to media reports, three police officers were killed and seven others wounded during an anti-terrorist operation in Russia’s Caucasus Republic of Ingushetia. The special unit was fired upon during the attempted arrest of suspected terrorists, the Kremlin-affiliated daily “Isvestia” reported, citing security circles. A manhunt is underway in the region for several men who attacked a police station a week ago and injured two police officers. Authorities raised their terror alert level.
According to the police, the suspects barricaded themselves in a house near the town of Malgobek. According to unconfirmed reports, there were four gunmen. So the operation was not yet complete. The North Caucasus, which also includes the former war zone of Chechnya, is now considered largely under Russian control. Still, there are occasional skirmishes between security forces and underground fighters. (nad/SDA)
