50 degrees in the sun: Heat wave has Thailand under control

An unusually intense heat wave is currently gripping large parts of Thailand. Meteorologists expected on Thursday in the Bang Na district of Bangkok that values up to 50 degrees will be reached in the sun.

In the province of Chon Buri on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, more than 49 degrees in the sun are expected, on the largest island of Phuket with almost 48 degrees, the newspaper “Bangkok Post” reported, citing the weather service.

The temperatures in the shade were still almost 40 degrees. On the street, many sweaty people tried to protect themselves from the sun with umbrellas.

In particular, the authorities warned the elderly and people with previous illnesses to stay outside for a long time. An employee of the Ministry of Health spoke about a possible heat stroke and urged the population to drink plenty of water.

April is considered the hottest month in the Southeast Asian holiday paradise. The highest temperature ever recorded in the shade was measured in 2016 in Mae Hong Son province in the north: 44.6 degrees. (sda/dpa)
