UN chief for refugee aid Filippo Grandi calls for a change in refugee policy, including in Switzerland. “The reality is: Europe needs millions of immigrants every year to function.”
This immigration must be controlled, even if it is not easy. “The discussion should be about what opportunities can be offered to them, for example, work in agriculture, in commerce, in the service sector, where personnel are already scarce,” said Grandi in an interview with the Tamedia titles published on Thursday . “But instead there’s a discussion about how to get them kicked out of the country.”
The countries don’t have to address the issue nationally, Grandi said. As a continent, quotas and visa programs need to be discussed. “Of course there is a price tag: in Italy in particular, many irregular migrants work for irregularly low wages. Prices would rise with wages. But you would put things in order. And the right to asylum would be there again for the people who need it.” (sda)
