Several dozen refugees rescued from distress in the English Channel

In France, several dozen refugees were rescued from distress when they tried to cross the English Channel to Great Britain. Three children were recovered with hypothermia on Wednesday, the prefecture responsible said. Accordingly, in two consecutive operations, the authorities rescued 28 and 13 people.

A naval patrol boat first discovered castaways in the water off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France early this morning. The patrol brought 28 people on board with a speedboat. The prefecture said three children and an adult were treated by rescuers for hypothermia. Later, the naval ship rescued another 13 people who were on board a boat in trouble.

In 2022, about 46,000 people will cross the English Channel on small refugee boats. According to the prefecture, five refugees were killed, four disappeared during the dangerous crossing. (sda/afp)
