“In my opinion, there is no doubt that he is being wrongly detained by Russia,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in Brussels on Wednesday. The ministry is currently working on the official classification of the arrest.

According to the White House, Russia’s ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, was summoned last Thursday over the incident. There was a conversation with top US diplomat Victoria Nuland, National Security Council communications director John Kirby said.

The correspondent of the well-known daily newspaper “Wall Street Journal” was arrested on Thursday by the Russian secret service FSB on suspicion of espionage in the megacity of Yekaterinburg in the Urals. The reporter, born in 1991, is provisionally detained until May 29. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years. The Gershkovich affair has further strained already tense relations between Washington and Moscow.

The United States also wants to release American Paul Whelan, who is imprisoned in Russia. He was convicted in 2018 of alleged espionage. “There is a proposal on the table that has been on the table for a few months,” said Minister Blinken of Foreign Affairs about this matter. A balance must be struck between bringing back people who have been wrongly detained and what it takes, he stressed.
