Asa Hutchinson is an honorable man. The former governor of Arkansas was one of the first prominent Republicans to openly oppose former President Donald Trump last Sunday. People wanted leaders “who appeal to the best in America and not just our worst instincts,” the 72-year-old told ABC.
In view of the impending indictment in New York, Hutchinson called on Trump to withdraw from the presidential race, in which he himself wants to participate. On Tuesday, Trump appeared in court in Manhattan, who presented him with 34 counts of the indictment. These are fairly minor offenses, which is why the former president was treated with care.
The 76-year-old did not have to wear handcuffs or have a police photo taken. After the charges were read, he was able to leave court without bail and return to Florida. According to the Washington Post, because Trump has no criminal record, Trump probably won’t have to go to jail, even if he’s convicted on all counts.
That hasn’t stopped Donald Trump from once again taunting supporters at his Mar-a-Lago residence about the judiciary, which Democrats abuse for political ends. He knows that most of the prominent Republicans are on his side. They immediately expressed their solidarity with him after the indictment became known.
Former Trump vice president Mike Pence described the allegations as a “scandal”. It will “just further divide this country,” he told CNN. In the US it is known that Pence and other party leaders want Trump to go to pepper country. But hardly anyone dares to follow Asa Hutchinson’s example.
Republicans can’t get away from Trump. In the meantime he seemed to weaken, but now he dominates the party again almost at will. In several polls, he is clearly ahead of his supposedly fiercest rival, Ron DeSantis. The Florida governor has so far disappointed the hopes of Trump opponents in the party.
The Republicans have every reason to disengage from the ex-president. In a CNN poll published Tuesday, 60 percent support the impeachment process against Trump. This confirms a well-known finding: not only the Democrats, but also a majority of independent voters are disgusted by the Trump circus.
Since his 2016 election victory, Trump has lost alone, both the 2018 midterms and his 2020 re-election. He has also been blamed for the “red wave” absence from last November’s midterm elections. While the premise favored unpopular President Joe Biden, the Republicans clearly missed their mark.
A fresh start without Donald Trump would be imperative for the Grand Old Party (GOP). But the courage to do so is lacking. Nikki Haley, Trump’s former UN ambassador, gave the reason for this last week during a campaign appearance in New Hampshire. Her former boss has about a quarter of the party base (“hard 25 percent”) on his side, Haley said.
In fact, the former governor of South Carolina, Donald Trump’s only semi-serious challenger for the 2024 presidential election, wanted to indicate that three-quarters of the Republican electorate were open to new things. Involuntarily, however, Nikki Haley exposed her party’s entire dilemma.
The hardcore fans – other estimates put up to 40 percent “always trumps” – worship their idol unconditionally. It is by no means certain that they would vote for another candidate. Rather, there is a risk that they will simply stay at home in November 2024.
Fox News has had a bad experience with this. When the right-wing broadcaster began to distance itself from Trump after the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, some viewers migrated to the even more extreme channels Newsmaxx and One America News Network (OANN). Today, Fox News is fully behind Trump.
For Republicans, this is a warning. The other accusations that Trump has to take into account (for example, for inciting voter fraud in the state of Georgia) can also do him no harm in the eyes of his fans. “I could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and I wouldn’t lose any voters,” he said during the 2016 campaign.
For better or for worse, the party is at the mercy of Donald Trump. You can’t win with him and you can’t win without him. This is especially true in the event that he misses the nomination and has to compete as a “wanted” candidate. Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, could be heading for re-election in the sleeper car.
