On Tuesday, all cameras were again focused on Donald Trump (76). The former US president is on trial in New York in an unprecedented trial. The prosecution accuses the Republican of falsifying business documents on 34 counts.
Also of interest to the public: who paid Trump for hush money? When the indictment was read out on Friday, it was announced that in addition to the porn actress Stormy Daniels (44), the ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal (52) and the bouncer Dino Sajudin would have received tens of thousands of dollars from him.
Now that the indictment has been read, it is a long wait. Trump is not due back in court until December 4. Before that, the defense lawyers have the option, among other things, to submit requests – and the public prosecutor’s office can respond.
Trump’s lawyers promptly asked that the ex-president not have to sit in the dock in person on December 4. They cited the expensive and complex security measures as the reason.
Judge Juan Merchan, 60, initially dismissed this, not without adding: “It was undoubtedly a huge undertaking for all involved.”
The process should really start in January 2024. If so, the trial would fall in the middle of the presidential election campaign.
Trump’s lawyers have called for the trial to begin in late spring. However, Judge Merchan countered that it was prudent to proceed as soon as possible. The judge made it clear on Tuesday that he would not interfere in political games. (nad)
