In the southern French port of Marseille, three men were killed on Monday night in three shootings in the drug environment.
Eight other men were injured by gunfire, two of them critical, police prefect Frédérique Camilleri told BFMTV on Monday. So the dead were 16, 23 and 29 years old. Some of the victims were known to the police, others were not. It is not yet clear why exactly those involved were shot.
There is an extensive drug trade in Marseille, the prefect said. “These shootings are, that’s all that’s clear at this point, in a clear connection to the drug trade.”
There is rampant use of firearms by drug dealers, who also target youth involved in the trade. “Drugs kill, and kill especially in Marseille.” Four people were injured in a shooting at a supermarket in the city on Saturday night.
Drug gangs dominate entire residential areas in France’s second largest city and deaths are frequent. Thirteen people have died since the beginning of this year. However, authorities have recently tried to combat the trade more effectively with concentrated policing. (oee/sda/dpa)
