Shortly before former US President Donald Trump’s arrival in New York, police have not seen any “specific threats” so far. “New York citizens should expect an increased police presence in parts of the city and temporary road closures over the next two days,” New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said Monday in view of the indictment in Trump’s case on Tuesday. “I want to remind everyone that violence and destruction are not part of legitimate, lawful expression.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams also warned would-be protesters not to get violent. “While there may be some troublemakers who want to come to our city tomorrow, the message is clear and simple. Take a look at yourself,” he said. New York is not a “playground for inappropriate anger.” of violence or vandalism and if anyone is caught in violent conduct, they will be arrested and held accountable,” Adams said. Adams was referring to radical MP and Trump loyalist Marjorie Talyor Greene, who called for protests in the metropolis on Tuesday .
The White House stressed that it is closely monitoring the situation in New York. “We will be prepared if the need arises,” said National Security Council communications director John Kirby. Violence has no place in the United States, but peaceful protest does.
Trump is expected to appear in court in New York on Tuesday. According to media reports, about 30 charges will be filed against the 76-year-old. Trump is the first former president in United States history to face criminal charges. Before the trial in Manhattan, Trump will likely be briefly detained so fingerprints and police photos can be taken of him. New York police prepared for protests. (sda/dpa)
