Naomi Lewis from Australia fell during a bike ride and landed on a highly poisonous stinging nettle called “Gympie-Gympie”. The result: The mother of four still feels the burning sensation in her legs nine months later.

Naomi Lewis (42) gave birth to four children and knows for sure: the encounter with the Australian nettle cannot be surpassed in terms of pain. In fact, the horror plant is one of the most poisonous plants in the world. The Dendrocnid Moroides, popularly known as “Gympie-Gympie” or Stinging Tree, made the Australian’s life hell for nine months.

The woman from the Australian state of Queensland was cycling with her husband in the countryside, ABC News reports. She fell off an embankment and landed on the poisonous plant. What she didn’t know was that the stinging nettles she landed on would cause her even more pain than the fall itself.

“No childbirth was nearly as painful”

The stinging hairs of the plant contain the toxin moroidin. Those who come into contact with it experience excruciating pain. Lewis’s skin soon began to itch as well.

“The pain was excruciating,” said Lewis. It feels like someone is snapping rubber bands on severely hypothermic legs. “I had four children — three caesarean sections and one natural birth,” begins Lewis. “And no birth was even remotely so painful.”

Fire for new months

The couple hurried to the nearest pharmacy, where they were given cold wax strips to remove the stinging hairs. In vain: the 42-year-old’s condition deteriorated to such an extent that she vomited. “I can’t stand it,” the Australian told her husband.

With the help of electric blankets and painkillers, the doctors were able to relieve her pain for the time being. After a week in hospital, the Australian was allowed to go home to her four children and her husband.

But that wasn’t the end of the specter: nine months after the incident, the Australian felt the burning in her legs. (lia)
