Canadian authorities have confirmed the deaths of eight people who tried to enter the United States in a swampy border area. Two small children are among the fatalities. The families are of Romanian and Indian descent, authorities said on Friday. The bodies were found near the St. Lawrence River in the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation, a reservation in southeastern Canada on the border with the US state of New York. It is located about 100 kilometers southwest of Montreal.
Authorities believe the people were trying to enter the United States illegally. They are now investigating the exact circumstances of his death.
Unauthorized border crossings at the US-Canadian border have also been a major political issue in recent times. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden agreed that in the future, both countries should be allowed to refuse asylum procedures if people fail to arrive at official border crossings in either country.
