89 percent of Parisians for ban on e-scooters

Banned in the future: e-scooters from three different providers in Paris.

“The citizens have clearly spoken out against the e-scooters,” said mayor Anne Hidalgo in the town hall on Sunday evening. «From September 1, there will no longer be scooters for rent in Paris. This is a victory for local democracy.” Despite the weak response to the survey in the city, the mayor said it was impressive that about 100,000 residents turned out to vote.

Hidalgo, who initiated the investigation, made no secret of the fact that she would prefer the scooters to be banned from the city. In any case, the use of private e-scooters should not be restricted.

Three rental companies in Paris offer about 15,000 e-scooters, which tourists and locals often treat rather carelessly. There are accidents and chaos on the sidewalks and calls for a ban. As the newspaper “Le Monde” reported, there were 408 e-scooter accidents in Paris last year, with three dead and 459 injured.

The permit for the landlords expires at the end of August. Providers should not accept the end of e-scooters in the Paris metropolitan area without a fight. They have already expressed concern that there will be bans elsewhere as well.

E-scooters often cause nuisance in German cities. Many municipalities have now declared war on the parking chaos in this country. In some places there are already separate parking spaces for scooters and tickets for illegally parked vehicles.

Every month, about 400,000 people in Paris use the “Trottinet”, as the e-scooters are called in French. The newspaper Le Parisien reported that 1.7 million scooter rides were made in October alone.

In early December, the scooter rental companies tightened the rules to avert an impending ban. Users must scan their ID upon registration so that only adults can use the scooters and hooligans can be more easily identified and excluded from rentals. This should also make it easier to detect traffic violations with the scooters, which must also be given a license plate. It was assured that unused scooters lying around on sidewalks and squares would be cleared up more quickly. The landlords wanted to employ twice as many staff. (SDA)
