Sanna Marin (37) trembled for her post for a long time – in the end it was not enough. According to an initial forecast, the Finnish prime minister will lose her office. According to forecasts, your Social Democratic Party is only in third place, behind the conservative Kok National Coalition Party led by ex-Finance Minister Petteri Orpo (53) and the right-wing populist Finns Party led by Riika Purra (45). In the late evening, Marin admits her electoral defeat.

That Sanna Marin had a suspicion of evil became apparent after the announcement of the first interim results. All party leaders faced the international press – except Marin. She only let it be known that she did not want to answer questions until after the announcement of the result. Later, the 37-year-old appeared with the journalists. When asked by Blick what mistakes she had made while in office, Marin replied evasively, saying she had made great strides in the country.

Big political star

In the election center of the Social Democrats in the Hotel Presidentti, their supporters were initially in a good mood. Many of their supporters, such as Rosamarie (29), wore t-shirts with the inscription “Team Sanna” and an image of the politician when they visited Blick.

Marin is regarded worldwide as a major political star and has repeatedly made a name for himself in recent years. For example, a video appeared in which she danced with friends. The Prime Minister has been praised for her lavish demeanor around the world – except in her own country. Because while her prime minister represented the country well to the outside world, she neglected her duties at home. Since 2019, the national debt has increased by 35 billion to 177 billion euros. Marin is accused of not having a debt reduction plan and of delegating important tasks to ministers.

The right-wing populist leader Riikka Purra also blew this horn on Sunday. At the Apollo Club in the capital Helsinki, where her party was watching the election, Purra took the time to talk to Blick. Sanna Marin hasn’t done everything bad in recent years, she said. “In terms of security policy, we’ve taken a big step forward, we’re about to join NATO,” Purra said. The problem is the high national debt. “Sanna Marin has spent too much money. Her migration policy was also much too soft.”

Now comes the conservative boss

The Conservative leader also spoke about the country’s financial problems. Confronted by Blick about what needs to change in Finland in the future, Petteri Orpo, who is likely to become the new prime minister, said: “Not much needs to change – except for one point. We need to get our finances under control and finally have a decent budget again.” He spoke of a “great victory” and added: “The Finns have shown that they want change.”

Now conservative coalition negotiations are starting, presumably with the right-wing populist Finnish party. “We could see very tough and long government negotiations,” said Finnish political scientist Hanna Wass, 45, of the University of Helsinki. The results would reflect a shift to the right by voters on economic policy. “Voters want spending cuts and government debt, not tax increases. That’s the line the conservatives are taking.”

Whether Orpo can attract the same attention as political star Marin on the international stage remains to be seen.
