“Believe it or not”: Trump wants to appear in court on Tuesday

After the unprecedented charges against former US President Donald Trump, the 76-year-old wants to appear in court in New York on Tuesday morning (local time).

He announced this on Monday evening via the online network Truth Social, of which he was a co-founder. He will leave his private home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, at noon (local time) on Monday. “On Tuesday morning, believe it or not, I’m going to court. This is not America as it should be!”

Media reports say Trump’s impeachment hearing in Manhattan is scheduled for Tuesday. The case concerns hush money payments to a porn actress. New York prepares for large crowds and demonstrations. The first protests have already been announced. Trump is using the indictment to re-present himself as a victim of a politically controlled judiciary and to mobilize his supporters, on whose votes he will depend in the 2024 presidential election.

Trump is the first former president in United States history to face criminal charges. The Manhattan district attorney’s office announced charges against the Republican on Thursday night. (sda/dpa)
