A Venezuelan non-governmental organization condemned the death of migrants in Mexico

The Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons (OVP) condemned it before international human rights organizations the death of 39 migrants in Mexico, in a fire at the station of the National Institute for Migration (INM) in Ciudad Juárez, on the border with the United States.

The non-governmental organization stated in a press release that the complaint had been sent Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR)United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Committee Against Torture, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Migrants and Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

He also requested a statement from these organizations about this fact, which was recorded last Monday. in which 39 migrants died, including 7 Venezuelans, 6 Hondurans, 7 Salvadorans, 18 Guatemalans and one Colombian.

In addition, he invited them to appoint an official from their offices so that they can go to the scene and start an investigation, with the permission of the Government of Mexico.

The OVP claimed that the facilities where these people were kept were not in compliance “minimum conditions of respect for human rights”.

“Immigration centers are not shelters where people are accommodated, on the contrary, they are centers where people are kept to resolve their immigration status, so that, during this short stay, it is the responsibility of the state to take care of the safety and health of migrants”he added.

The center of the National Migration Institute (INM) where the fire broke out will be permanently closed, the Secretary of Security and Protection of Citizens of Mexico announced on Friday. Rosa Icela Rodriguez.

The migrants who were there, he explained, will be transferred to the integration center Leona Vicario, which is also located in the border town with NOW and that it depends on the Ministry of Labour, not on INM.

For her part, the prosecutor specialized in human rights from the Office of the Attorney General of Mexico, Sara Irene Herrerías, indicated that the five people arrested for the fire are in pretrial detention and that next Tuesday they will face a hearing where the charges will be formulated and connected to the process.
