Mass graves, destroyed buildings, wounded and dead – the images of the Russian attacks on the Ukrainian city of Mariupol are unforgettable. In March 2022, bombs fell on a children’s hospital, a maternity hospital and a theater where civilians had taken refuge. The bombing of the theater alone claimed between 300 and 600 casualties.

Now Petro Andruschenko (47), the escaped mayor of the city currently occupied by the Russians, writes: “The murderer of the citizens of Mariupol has been identified”. The order for the bombing was given by Sergei Atroschenko (41), commander of a combat aircraft regiment.

The suspected war criminal was exposed by a Ukrainian hacking team called Cyberresistance, which published its findings on the website of the Ukrainian research network InformNapalm.

Among them are Atroschenko’s personal and sensitive data. According to Cyberresistance, he was born in the Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr, but grew up in Russia and later lived in Crimea. The hackers also retrieved Atroschenko’s phone numbers, address, pay slips, private emails and even suggestive photos. The alleged telephone numbers have since been blocked.

Woman accidentally let company run into knives

According to their own words, the hackers obtained the information through the commander’s wife, Lilia Atroschenko (42). Posing as members of the party, they persuaded them to deliver a “surprise” to her husband and his unit. For this, Lilia Atroschenko has to contact the wives of the other company members.

Atroschenko did as he was told and mobilized other women for a joint photo shoot. Dressed in uniforms and with their husbands’ numerous medals on their chests, the women posed for the camera at the airfield in the city of Primorsko-Akhtarsk, from where the fighter jets took off for Mariupol. Totally patriotic, with a fighter jet in the background, decorated with a large Z symbol.

Ukraine hopes for international arrest warrant

The photos that Atroschenko then sent to the hackers were then compared to a photo from the unit’s New Year’s Eve party. It shows soldiers with their wives. This is how the hackers got the identities of some men who carried out the bloody orders of their commander. The fact that the women wore their husbands’ medals during the photo shoot helped with that.

InformNapal forwarded the data to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Bombing the theater is a war crime. Ukraine now hopes that an international punishment order will be issued against Atroschenko.
