US President Biden is planning a visit to Mississippi after severe storms

After the deadly storms in the US state of Mississippi, President Joe Biden and his wife Jill want to visit the affected region this Friday.

The White House announced Wednesday (local time) that the two wanted to travel to Rolling Fork in Mississippi. They wanted to talk to emergency services and people from the affected communities and get an overview of the reconstruction.

A few days ago, severe storms raged in the southern United States. According to civil defense officials, 25 people were killed and dozens injured in the poorest US state of Mississippi alone, and at least one person has died in the neighboring state of Alabama, according to media reports.

At least one tornado swept through Mississippi Friday night, bringing several storms to the region. The tornado caused destruction in the towns of Silver City and Rolling Fork near Jackson, Mississippi. Roofs were swept off houses, trees uprooted and power lines damaged. Biden declared a state of emergency in Mississippi over the weekend to release federal funds for reconstruction. (sda/dpa)
