Great Britain will house illegal immigrants in former military bases

The British government confirms that the decision is not only to save money, but also to discourage more foolish people from crossing the English Channel

four ancients bases of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) will be conditioned to accommodate immigrants who enter the UK illegally and who, under the new bill, will be temporarily detained before deportation. This was announced this Wednesday by the State Secretary for Immigration, Robert Jenrick, during a speech in the House of Commons. The bases are located in the Lincolnshire, Essex and Sussex regions. The use of old passenger ferries is also being considered.

Jenrick acknowledged that the measure has two goals. On the one hand, saving money, stopping paying for hotels that house thousands of simpapel already in the country. On the other hand, to discourage more people from trying to reach British shores. According to the BBC, Currently, there are 51,000 immigrants in about 400 hotels. “Accommodation for migrants must meet the basic needs of life and nothing more, because we cannot risk becoming a magnet for millions of displaced people seeking better economic prospects,” Jenrick said.

Priority for Sunak

One of the five priorities set by the Rishi Sunak government for this year is the fight against illegal immigration. In 2022, a record was broken, with the arrival of 45,756, after crossing the English Channel in weak boats. And just a few weeks ago, the Minister of the Interior, Suella Bravermanhe admitted that this year, up to 80,000 people could arrive.

To reverse the situation, the conservative executive introduced tough measures. Among them is a bill that would bar those who enter the country illegally from applying for asylum. The draft also stipulates that those who reach British shores illegally will be banned for life from applying for citizenship and will not only be deported, but permanently denied entry.

The initiative was harshly criticized by the opposition. Labor MP Yvette Cooper said the announcement “admitting failure” in the government’s asylum policy.

But not only the opponents of the Government questioned the plan, but also the authorities of the municipalities where the bases are located, some of which are in the hands of the toriesThey announced that they would go to court to paralyze him.
