In Putin’s army, paramedics become sex slaves

What Margarita tells Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is not for the faint of heart. It is about women being ‘passed off’ as sex slaves, horrific abuse and shocking brutality in the Russian army. According to the former contract soldier, Russian paramedics were systematically urged to become so-called “field women”.

The task of the “field women”: cooking, washing and satisfying the sexual desires of the officers. Life was made hell for paramedics who refused, says Margarita, who says she takes antidepressants to cope with the severe trauma she suffered in Ukraine.

She herself resisted the advances of the commanders, she says. The result: “I just slept outside for a month. While others slept in tents and houses, I slept on the ground next to a road in a small forest,” she says.

Officer shoots ‘field woman’

Once she saw an officer shooting at his “field wife”. According to Margarita, paramedic Svetlana has been living with a permanent disability since the incident. According to Margarita, the officer blamed the Ukrainians for the crime.

While Margarita resisted the pressure to the last, other women “just hooked up”. “They decided it was better to live in this war in paradise – fed and with cigarettes.”

If you don’t want to go to the front, you have to suffer

On another occasion, the doctor saw how male conscripts who refused to fight at the front were mistreated. The recruits were routinely locked naked in damp basements that were said to be infested with rats.

If this method did not work, the refusers had to dig their own graves. After that, other soldiers would have buried them alive and the platoon or company commander would have fired on the buried. Margarita added that she treated several recruits who had been beaten by their comrades.

In desperation, some soldiers shot themselves in the leg to escape the front line. But only patients with life-threatening injuries come to the hospital. (nad)
