US companies pay $1 billion for women in Africa

This was announced by US Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday at the end of a four-day visit to Ghana in West Africa. After meeting with women entrepreneurs in the capital Accra, Harris traveled to Tanzania on Africa’s east coast on Wednesday. She is expected in Zambia on Friday.

The vast majority of investment commitments come from private companies or foundations. More than $400 million will flow to projects that create digital access only for women, as surveys show that 66 percent of all women in Africa do not use the internet. Women are more cut off from the digital economy than men. The projects include investments in companies operating solar mobile network stations in rural areas, training for women in areas such as cybersecurity and support programs for African technology start-ups.

Harris’ trip marks the United States’ fifth high-level visit to the continent in just a few months. The US pledge is also seen as a response to China’s dominance of investment in the continent of approximately 1.4 billion people. While in Ghana, Harris met with President Nana Akufo-Addo, youth and artists, among others, and gave a speech commemorating the horrific consequences of slavery. On Thursday, Harris will meet with President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the East African country’s first female head of state, and the company’s founders in Tanzania.
