Trade union boss wants mediation

President Emmanuel Macron’s reform, pushed through parliament, should be suspended for a few weeks to allow consultations with a narrow circle of mediators, Berger said Tuesday morning at the start of another nationwide day of protest on France’s inter-broadcaster.

Macron invited the unions to talk about work-related issues. That makes sense if the increase in the retirement age from 62 to 64 is temporarily suspended and the pension issue is also discussed.

For this Tuesday, the unions have again called for strikes and demonstrations against the controversial reform. Authorities expected 650,000 to 900,000 participants for the tenth day of the protest and more than 200 rallies are planned. The protests, which have been peaceful for weeks, have recently been overshadowed by mass violence and clashes.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced the deployment of 13,000 police officers on Tuesday. So far there is no sign of the government giving in. The pension dispute must be discussed at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The protests are directed against the gradual increase of the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. With the reform, the middle government wants to close an imminent gap in the pension fund. The dispute worsened as the government pushed through the text without a vote by the National Assembly. A week ago, two no-confidence motions in the government failed. The reform has therefore succeeded. It will now be reviewed by the Constitutional Council. Macron wants the reform to take effect by the end of the year.
