The big 24-hour strike in Germany has started

At midnight, a major warning strike in the transport sector began in Germany.

The 24-hour traffic warning strike of the Verdi and EVG unions started at midnight. Trains, buses and planes will be halted throughout Germany on Monday. On the railways, long-distance traffic will be canceled completely and regional traffic largely.

Almost all German airports also went on strike, but not Berlin Airport. Waterways and ports and the motorway company are also affected. People will not be able to go to work and many schools and nurseries are likely to be closed today.

Heavy traffic is expected

Full streets can also be expected because public transport is going to strike in seven states and many people will probably switch to the car as a result. Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony and large parts of Bavaria are affected.

With the warning strikes, the Verdi trade union and the railway and transport union (EVG) want to increase the pressure in their current collective bargaining negotiations. Under tense circumstances, Verdi and the civil service association dbb will again meet representatives of the municipalities and the federal government in Potsdam on Monday. At the EVG, further negotiations with the various railway companies are underway from the middle of this week. Negotiations with Deutsche Bahn may only be continued after Easter. (SDA/kes)
