With Putin, Xi shows his true colors

Affirming their friendship: Xi Jinping (left) and Vladimir Putin.

China’s role has been one of the great unknowns in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Head of state and party leader Xi Jinping (69) always tried to be elegant. On the one hand, he avoided condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) for his aggression, on the other hand, he called for “sovereignty and territorial integrity” for all countries in a peace plan.

What exactly is meant by this “territorial integrity” has never been specified by Beijing. The Chinese embassy in Bern did not respond to SonntagsBlick’s request that China thereby demand the withdrawal of Russian troops from sovereign Ukraine. “The legitimate security interests and concerns of all countries must be taken seriously and given due consideration,” was the evasive reply. There were also no concrete answers to questions about what Beijing called the war in Ukraine and when a Chinese politician would visit Ukraine.

We have clarity since the beginning of the week. When Xi landed in Moscow on Monday, he smiled as Putin greeted him with “dear friend.” Hours of talks followed during the state visit, during which the ties between Moscow and Beijing were strengthened. One of the central deals is the 2,800-kilometer “Power of Siberia 2” pipeline, which the Kremlin says should transport Russian gas to Beijing instead of Europe by 2030 at the latest. A land corridor for grain and other agricultural resources will also be built.

Assault rifles delivered to Russia

Moscow wants more. The Kremlin is also asking Beijing for weapons and ammunition as the Russian military appears to be running on gum. According to the American magazine “Politico”, Chinese companies have supplied Russia with 1,000 assault rifles and equipment. More war material will probably follow, at least that is what the US and NATO claim with a warning finger.

China has always taken an objective and fair position on the Ukraine crisis. However, the fact that Xi is getting involved with the Russian warmonger contradicts this statement. Because even if no weapons are delivered, Beijing is financing the Russian invasion with the trade offensive.

Xi Jinping showed his true colors during his visit to Moscow. At his invitation, Putin will soon pay a return visit to Beijing to further strengthen ties. With this move, China’s “objective and just position” is certainly not credible and the peace plan is worthless.
