Trains and buses will be halted in many regions of Germany this coming Monday. Flight operations have been severely disrupted. Even highway companies, but also water and shipping companies would go on strike. And even road tunnels are closed. The SBB advises against traveling to the Federal Republic.
Germany’s second largest trade union, the United Services Union ver.di, and the railway and transport union EVG are calling for a warning strike. The all-day strike starts at midnight on the night of March 26-27 and ends after 24 hours.
Local public transport will be most affected in the states of Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Saxony, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria. In addition, ver.di is calling for work stoppages at Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Leipzig/Dresden and Dortmund airports. Ver.di boss Frank Werneke (55) assumes significant delays throughout Germany, up to and including the shutdown of transport services in all areas mentioned. “The strike day will have a huge impact,” the union leader said in Germany’s “Tagesschau”.
Due to the strike, the ICE, night trains and regional trains to and from Germany will come to a standstill on Monday, explains SBB media spokeswoman Fabienne Wittwer Blick. There would be individual failures as early as March 26 and 28. Canceled cross-border trains would be replaced within Switzerland. National traffic will therefore not be affected. SBB advises against traveling to Germany on March 27. “Travellers are asked to get information directly from Deutsche Bahn,” says Wittwer. Malfunctions are also expected at Zurich airport. “We do not yet know how many passengers are involved, as the individual airlines still have to communicate. Some flights to Germany will certainly be cancelled,” says media spokeswoman Bettina Kunz.
The trade union ver.di called on 120,000 workers and the EVG 230,000 workers to strike. Mass gatherings are expected.
First of all the people. Hundreds of thousands will barely be able to get to work on Monday. According to the ADV airport association, 380,000 business and private travelers alone cannot board their flight. Deutsche Bahn stops on March 27. There is no air traffic in Munich and Frankfurt and no public transport in the seven federal states. The ADAC recommends working from home on Mondays.
In the third round of negotiations, the unions demand 10.5 percent more wages or at least 500 euros more per month. In the second round of negotiations at the end of February, the employers had proposed a wage increase of five percent in two steps and one-off payments of a total of 2,500 euros. The unions were not happy about that.
With misunderstanding. Bahn HR director Martin Seiler (59) calls the announced strike “totally excessive, unnecessary and disproportionate”. Ralph Beis of the airport association ADV also criticized the attempt “to have French conditions drawn to Germany through a general strike”. The ADV top man argues for a return to the negotiating table. FDP Transport Minister Volker Wissing (52) is also nervous about the editorial network Germany (RND): “I can only appeal to all collective bargaining partners to be aware of their responsibility and to minimize the impact on the population as much as possible hold. “
