The oligarch Viktor Medvechuk (68) was to become Putin’s governor in Ukraine: according to the plans of Vladimir Putin (70), he should have moved to the presidential office in Kiev once Russia won the blitzkrieg. But it turned out differently. Russia could not overthrow the government.
Medvechuk politicized for the pro-Russian Ukrainian opposition party For Life and maintained close ties with the Russian president. In April 2022, Medvechuk was arrested on charges of treason. In September, he came to Russia as part of a prisoner exchange. Putin traded 100 officers, including some high-ranking officers, for one man.
In Ukraine, Medvechuk is considered a traitor and even had his Ukrainian citizenship revoked. Today he lives in Russia – and sits on a pile of money. The fact that he was able to build a comfortable life in Russia shows that Putin still stands by him. But where does the money come from if the owners have been seized in Ukraine?
Recent research by Radio Svoboda shows that Medvechuk owns two oil companies. There is no information about the owners of the company in the official records, but the trail leads to Medvechuk and his wife. So he owns 33 gas stations – and that washes a lot of money into the treasury. With this money, the oligarch wants to give his political career in Ukraine a second chance.
Medvechuk’s target: Volodymyr Zelensky’s (45) post in Kiev. “Millions of people disagree with Zelensky’s actions,” he said in an interview with Russia Today in January. He wants to present himself to you as an alternative.
Medvechuk’s task: to make Ukraine a state loyal to Russia. It is conceivable that Putin wants to set up a kind of government-in-exile for Ukraine with Medvedchuk, writes the global network for peace theories “Carniegie”. Moscow is ready to artificially create a peace party led by Medvechuk “to hold peace talks with Medvedchuk instead of Zelensky” – with itself, in fact.
