In the middle of the Pacific Ocean on the open sea, a whale suddenly rams into your boat. Only a few minutes pass and the four-passenger sailboat begins to sink. At the last minute, the German Simon Fischer (25) and his three friends managed to get to safety with lifeboats.
“It was a blatant experience,” says the man from North Rhine-Westphalia on Instagram about his experiences.
As “Focus” writes, the sea creature hit the boat out of nowhere. This then sank within 20 minutes. “The damage was too great for us to do anything.”
Skipper Rick Rodriguez tells the Washington Post that the whale surprised her at lunch. “The second vegetarian pizza was just coming out of the oven when half the boat was lifted.”
Lunch had to be interrupted immediately, because after a few minutes the sailboat was already full of water.
The group makes a distress call and saves themselves in the dinghy. Eight hours pass before the four are rescued. “We were really lucky to have so many other sailors around us,” says Fischer. A catamaran named “Rolling Stones” heard her distress call and immediately took off.
They are now back on the mainland, in French Polynesia. The experience is now ten days ago. Fischer says everyone is fine and no one was hurt. “Thank God we were rescued pretty quickly,” said the sailor.
Fischer is happy to finally be safely back on land. Although he now has to come to terms with what happened and trust in the oceans is gone for the first time, the sailor is convinced: “It wasn’t my last adventure.” (dzc/man)
