“You have to tell Putin!”

Ukrainians celebrate Giorgia Meloni for her emotional speech in the Italian parliament.

She gestures passionately and speaks at full volume: we are talking about Giorgia Meloni (46), the Italian Prime Minister. At a meeting on Wednesday, MPs from the populist Five Star Movement (Movimento 5 Stelle) asked when Italy would finally stop supplying Ukraine with arms and dragging Italy into the war. Because Meloni could barely keep up.

A video of her response to the EU-critical move is currently circulating on Ukraine’s Telegram channels: “MP Scutella tells us to stop? I think you should tell Putin. If we stop, we will allow Ukraine to be invaded. I am not so hypocritical as to confuse invasion with peace.”

Meloni gets really emotional. She wants to have tough but fair discussions about the arms issue in Ukraine. “It must be stated clearly: if our aid is withdrawn, we will allow a sovereign country with a free, independent people to be attacked. That’s just irresponsible. If you don’t stop that, you become part of the propaganda.”

“Should Ukraine’s Borders Be Controlled?”

This does not mean that one should trade only with weapons. Italy will try to resolve the conflict through diplomatic channels, but one cannot simply push boundaries. But the situation is complex.

“You think it’s important to sit down at the negotiating table. Don’t you think Russia should be asked to cease hostilities and withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory? Do you think Ukraine’s borders should be controlled – and how? you that Moscow should hand over the occupied territories and hold a self-determination referendum, right?” shouts Meloni.

“I like to hear that when we are serious about peace. Otherwise, what is being done here is propaganda at the expense of a sovereign nation, a free people and international law – and that is irresponsible.”

Ukraine says thank you

Meloni is being celebrated on Twitter for her speech and its emotionality. She is an asset to Italy and would have surprised people positively on this point. She was particularly praised for holding up a mirror to opponents of arms supplies. Italy can finally be proud of one of their statements. Meloni is often criticized in Italy: she is xenophobic and does nothing to combat climate change.

Kiev also commented on the 46-year-old’s speech and thanked her. The head of the Ukrainian presidential office Andriy Yermak (51) responded to the debate via Twitter: “A wonderful speech by Meloni. Thank you for your continued support for Ukraine and for understanding what this war is really about. We appreciate the great help.” (A)
