Flash floods in northern Afghanistan – 300 homes destroyed

In Afghanistan, flash floods have inundated part of northern Balkh province. Local media reported this on Friday, citing provincial police spokesman Mohamad Asif Wasiri.

A video shared by media outlets on social media shows torrential bodies of water making their way between homes. Wasiri did not yet provide any information about the victims in the media. However, the local newspaper “Etilaatroz” spoke of 300 houses destroyed in reference to security forces in Balch.

Extreme weather events such as drought or floods are on the rise in Afghanistan. In August 2020, flash floods in the east of the country killed 100 people and injured at least 250 others. Afghanistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change, but has hardly contributed to it.
