Visitors to Westminster Abbey in London are allowed to visit shortly after the coronation of King Charles III. first enter the area of the old church, where the monarch will sit at the ceremony – but only in stockings. The abbey announced this on Friday evening.
To protect the sensitive mosaic floor, shoes must be removed during the special tour “Crown and Church”, which is offered from May 15 to July 29. A spokesman for the abbey said:
The Cosmatians were a group of Italian artisans who in the Middle Ages used a special technique called incrustation to decorate floors and other areas in churches with marble mosaics.
The Cosmatian cladding in Westminster Abbey dates from the 13th century and is believed to be one of the greatest art treasures of the Middle Ages in Britain. It was carpeted for some 150 years – and also at the coronation of Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953.
At the coronation of Charles III. but it must be visible. It shows a geocentric universe – that is, with the Earth at its center – and even includes a prediction for the date of the end of the world. However, with the world’s supposed permanence of 19,683 years, that’s a long way off.
