70,000 men. So many Russian soldiers may have died in the war in Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in the US came up with this number two weeks ago. Independent Russian journalists were able to confirm as many as 17,375 names.
This year in particular, the number of deaths has risen sharply. About a month ago, citing statistics from the Ukrainian General Staff, the British Ministry of Defense reported that on average more than 800 Russian soldiers were killed every day in the battle for Bakhmut – for weeks on end. The figures cannot be independently verified. But the massive arrival of coffins in Russia is also apparent from messages and recordings on social media.
For example, a cemetery in the city of Vladivostok in the Far East had to be expanded because far and wide there is no space left on the actual site. This can be read on the Russian Telegram channel “Sirena”.
A resident had filmed a row of hearses at the cemetery “Morskoye” (in English: marine cemetery). “One after the other they drive to the cemetery,” she says in the video.
Due to the large number of war casualties in Ukraine, the military are now buried outside the barrier – right next to the road – as shown in the video. “I will show you the entrance to the cemetery. New graves are being dug,” says the woman, filming the fresh graves, the coffins and the people. Also on display is a portrait of a man in military uniform in a black frame with carnations in front.
“There is no more room in the back, now people are buried here in front,” continues the visitor to the cemetery. It first shows the ancient tombs on a hill among the trees, before moving to the forecourt of the car park where the vehicles are lined up.
“Young men have died in vain,” the woman laments as she films the countless grave wreaths and wooden crosses. “Horror, horror!” Until December, there was not a single grave outside the grounds of the “Morskoye” cemetery, the woman says. “Now the hearses are lining up!”
Of the more than 17,000 deaths reported by BBC Russia and Mediazona journalists, more than 4,000 came from the Siberian and Far Eastern regions. (man)
