Now Vladimir Putin is sending old Soviet tanks to the front.

The freight train rushes by. There are tanks on the flat cars – and lots and lots of them. Their target: the front in Ukraine. However, they are not modern machines, but old tanks. They come from the time of the Soviet Union (1922-1991).

They are said to be T-34 and T-55 models. It is doubtful whether the tank deliveries will affect the situation at the front, which has remained largely unchanged for months.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the Russians are running out of material for their aggressive war in Ukraine. That is why old camps are now being looted.

Even then inferior to Western tanks

The T-34 was built from 1940 to 1958 and saw service in World War II. Between 1939 and 1945, more than 50,000 copies rolled off the assembly line. With more than 80,000 units, it is one of the most built tanks ever.

The T-55 model is not that outdated, but it is at least several decades old. This type of tank was produced in the 60s and 70s. But even then, the T-55 was inferior in combat to Western tanks such as the British Centurion or the American M60.

Ukrainians destroyed many tanks with drones

Since the end of May 2022, the Russians have been using the T-62 in Ukraine. It was also built in the 1960s and 1970s. As it has been shown, it poses no problems for the Ukrainian army. Due to its age, it can only be used to support infantry, but not against main battle tanks.

Many have already been destroyed by drones by the Ukrainians. According to the British Ministry of Defence, 800 of the T-62 tanks have already been taken out of storage and taken to the front.

“Stop Fooling People”

The T-62 was only intended as a temporary solution at the time. In the end, about 20,000 units were produced. The main advantage over Western tanks at the time: the 115 mm gun. The T-62 convinced with a higher penetrating power. And was therefore often used by the Russians. But it often catches fire after hits. The result: the total loss of the tank.

The Russian state news agency Ria Novosti published an article on Wednesday about the former pride of the Soviet Union. It praised the T-62 to the skies, even claiming it to be superior to modern western main battle tanks. “How can a sixty-year-old tank outperform a western vehicle that is more modern and better?” said a military blogger.

“Don’t joke, if there’s one thing the T-62 excels at, it’s the year it goes into production. Where are the modern tanks?” he continues, eventually describing the T-62 as “scrap”.
