The date depends on the appearance of the new crescent moon and can therefore differ slightly from country to country.

During Ramadan, devout Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex from sunrise to sunset for a month. In the evening, people traditionally gather to break the fast together. Due to high food prices – many countries in the Arab world are struggling with high inflation – families in poorer households will have difficulty organizing the iftar evening, just like last year. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.

It is estimated that there are about 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide. Most of them live in Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The two holiest places in Islam, Mecca and Medina, are in Saudi Arabia.
