Sunak’s Tory rivals are unsuccessfully opposing a Brexit deal for Northern Ireland

The maneuver remained symbolic, as the so-called Windsor frame was accepted with 515 votes

Rishi Sunak managed to get the British Parliament to approve the agreement it reached with the European Union (EU) to resolve the dispute over the protocol Brexit for Northern Ireland. However, she confirmed that in her ranks she has great rivals, not to mention enemies, who joined together and unsuccessfully tried to stop the so-called Windsor frame.

The pact, which will among other things allow the Northern Ireland parliament to block the application of any community law in the territory, without affecting membership of the single market, was approved by the House of Commons thanks to the vote of 281 Conservative MPs, 160 Labor and other opposition forces to a total of 515 MPs.

However, on the 22 tories, among which Sunak’s predecessors stand out, Liz Truss and Boris Johnson; and former ministers Priti Patel and Jacob Rees-Mogg, as well as the formation’s former leader, Ian Duncan Smith, joined the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) protesters in their rejection. Likewise, another 48 conservative legislators abstained from voting, as they were not present. These absences made the opposition’s support for the text unnecessary.

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Steve Baker, who chaired the Conservative Party’s European Research Group, which brings together the party’s Europhobes, called on Johnson to act like a “statesman” and support the deal; and that she did not decide to be a branch of the controversial Nigel Farage, one of the promoters Brexitbut the appeal failed.

In the previous debate, critics of the pact made harsh accusations against the Government. “I don’t understand why Northern Irish companies have to comply with EU regulations, even if they don’t sell you a piece. It hurts our position within the UK,” he said. Jeffrey Donaldson, leader of the DUP.
