Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) received the highest visit from Beijing on Monday: President Xi Jinping (69) in person. The two announced a massive expansion of trade on the Eastern Front and agreed to build a new gas pipeline. The alliance against the West was celebrated with a joint six-course dinner.

For this, a large meal was served in the Kremlin. For the main course, the heads of state could choose between white salmon and reindeer. There was also seafood, quail with mushrooms in blinis (Russian pancakes) and ucha, a simple Russian soup made from fish, carrots and potatoes.

Cream meringue pavlova with pomegranate was served for dessert. There were also fine wines from the 2020 vintage from the winemaker Diwnomorskoje to drink. The Kremlin boss couldn’t offer champagne. Because he’s on the sanctions list.

18 paper bags full of chickens

From quail egg to pomegranate – all products on the menu come from Russia regionally. So while the Chinese president was served the typical delicacies, his delegation apparently left empty-handed. But Xi’s employees had no appetite for Russian food. The delegation ordered from the Kentuck Fried Chicken (KFC) fast food chain.

While the heads of state were dining, a supplier drove to the five-star hotel where the Chinese delegation was staying. He unloaded 18 bags from the trunk. KFC has officially withdrawn from trading in Russia, but now sells the crispy chicken strips under the name “Rostic’s,” writes Business Insider.

The staff of the Chinese hotel chain Soluxe in Moscow specializes in guests from China. All speaking Chinese and Asian dishes make guests feel at home. The luxury hotel in the heart of the Russian capital even has a Chinese garden.

Situation in Ukraine discussed at the table

On Tuesday, Xi and Putin dined at the Grand Kremlin Palace in the presence of other State Duma members. Here the two “friends”, as they called each other during the visit, toasted and enjoyed king crab, braised duck and borscht. This writes the Russian newspaper Gazeta.

The talks about the “crisis situation in Ukraine” remained as bland as the fish soup in the third course. The content of the conversation between Xi and Putin remained secret, although the Kremlin boss indicated on Monday that it would of course be discussed. In any case, peace in Ukraine, as envisioned in China’s 12-point plan, could not be made pleasing to Xi Putin. On Wednesday he boarded a plane back to China.
