Market or laboratory: New clues about the origin of the coronavirus

Scientists continue to search for the origin of the coronavirus. A new analysis of gene samples could now yield important information.

New epidemiological findings point to the Chinese city of Wuhan as the origin of the coronavirus pandemic. This is evidenced by data uploaded by Chinese scientists to an international database, which has since been deleted. However, Western scientists were able to access and evaluate the data.

This strengthens the suspicion that the coronavirus, which was first discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, originated in the animal market in the Chinese metropolis. Worldwide, nearly seven million people have died as a result of an infection with the corona virus.

Path leads to live animal market

The data, which has since been deleted, was genetic samples taken at the Wuhan 2020 live animal fair and stored by the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to the Western scientists, the gene sequences showed that raccoon dogs and other animals susceptible to the coronavirus were traded on the market.

“This is further evidence that the Huanan market (…) is the epicenter of the pandemic.”

There are samples in which the virus has been found that contain more animal than human genetic material. The animals could be infected with the virus.

laboratory leak? China has denied the suspicions

According to the experts, the virus would have jumped to humans here. “This is further evidence that the Huanan market (…) is the epicenter of the pandemic,” says the report, which is authored by Michael Worobey of the University of Arizona, Kristian Andersen of the Scripps Research Institute in California and Florence Debarre. from the Sorbonne University in Paris.

The World Health Organization (WHO) had already asked China on Friday to make the deleted CDC data public. The GGD was initially unavailable for comment on Tuesday.

US President Joe Biden signed a law on Monday that provides for the release of information about the origin of the coronavirus. Read more about it here. The Wall Street Journal reported in February that the US Department of Energy believed the pandemic was likely caused by a leak in a Chinese laboratory. China has denied these suspicions.
