The Chinese head of state and party leader Xi Jinping (69) has so far always been reserved on the issue of war. Since Tuesday we know exactly which side he is on. With his state visit to Moscow and his offer, he supports Russian President Vladimir Putin (70).
The two countries want to massively expand their trade. The two rulers agreed on this in Moscow. Putin announced that he was close to an agreement with Xi on the construction of a new gas pipeline. With the 2800-kilometer “Power of Siberia 2”, the gas must be routed to China instead of Europe by 2030 at the latest.
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin (57) also spoke out in favor of a land corridor for grain and other agricultural goods from Russia to China. He estimated the value of bilateral investment projects at more than 154 billion euros.
During the meeting, which ends on Wednesday, the Chinese peace plan for the war in Ukraine was also discussed. What was discussed and whether China will provide Russia with weapons remained secret. However, it is safe to assume that Putin is asking for support as his army is running low on ammunition.
Xi invited Mishustin and Putin to Beijing for a return visit. An international war crimes warrant for the Kremlin chief has been in effect since last week. However, China and Russia do not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
While Xi is visiting Russia, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, 65, made a surprise visit to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. There he met President Volodymyr Zelensky (45), whom he promised “solidarity and unwavering support” from Tokyo and the economic powers of the G7.
Japan, in line with the West, has imposed sanctions on Russia and supports Ukraine. However, the pacifist constitution does not allow Japan to supply arms to Ukraine.
