“We will return them when it is safe in Ukraine”

The International Criminal Court in The Hague has issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) and Russian Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lwowa-Belowa (39). The accusation: Russia abducted Ukrainian children from the occupied territories.

Now Russian UN representative Vasily Nebensja (61) comments on the allegations. At a press conference on Monday, he said the children “needed to be protected from the dangers that military operations could pose”. The children will be returned to Ukraine as soon as it is safe for them, the representative said at a news conference.

According to Nebensia, Russia also wants to hold an informal session of the UN Security Council in early April to show that “the issue of forcibly bringing children to Russia” is “completely exaggerated”, writes the Tass news agency.

In Russia, children are adopted

More than 16,000 children have been abducted to Russia, according to the UN. According to the report, their Ukrainian identity is being expelled from them in re-education camps. Many children are adopted by Russian parents. Lvova-Belova reported in September how the children’s hatred turned into “love for Russia”.

Lvova-Belova said the children will not be returned to Ukraine. “It is my job to act in the best interests of the children,” said Lvowa Beova. “We asked the children if they wanted to go back and explained to them that they now have the option to do so. Nobody wanted to go back.”
