“Last generation” climate activists in Austria blocked numerous avenues on Monday morning to draw attention to their concerns. In many places, the activists stuck to the road.
In Villach, however, the demonstrators had to end their action early. The blockade was over after only two and a half hours. The curious reason, according to the portal “5 minutes”: the climate stickers had to go to the toilet.
Activist Anja Windl (25), who took part in the protest, explained: “Part of the urge to urinate just got in the way.”
Nevertheless, the student, known in Austria as “Climate Shakira”, is satisfied. “We’ve disrupted everyday life a bit,” she said. There had also been insults, but at least two passers-by “understood” the protest.
But how did the air conditioning stickers get off the road so quickly? The police usually use solvents to get the demonstrators off the road. To avoid more pain, the hand is slowly removed from the asphalt. For Windl and Co. instead it was Monday: close your eyes and get through.
Before the “Last Generation” protests in Villach, Vienna, Innsbruck and other places, there were reports of an “unregistered gathering” and “illegal use” of traffic.
Recently, the Austrian offshoot of the “Last Generation” caused a stir when activists at Vienna’s Leopold Museum smeared a Gustav Klimt painting protected by glass with oil. An activist also taped his hand to the protective glass. (nad)
