The Israeli opposition continues to reject Netanyahu’s judicial reform despite the changes introduced

The main leaders of the political opposition in Israel reiterated this Monday their rejection of the judicial reform promoted by the executive government of Benjamin Netanyahu, as they believe insufficient changes agreed on Sunday by the parties of the ruling coalition and This does not prevent them from ultimately setting the pace in the courts.

The main opposition leader, former prime minister Yair Lapid, warned that the new proposal did not prevent a “hostile takeover” of the justice system by the government. In this sense, he reminded, it enables the appointment of like-minded people to key positions, which is “exactly what they wanted from the beginning”.

Labor member Merav Michaeli also urged not to “buy into” Netanyahu’s Likud messages, because “no concession” reality in the text that the Government now hopes to put to a vote in the Parliament before Easter. “We cannot stop the protests,” he stressed, according to the newspaper The Times of Israel.

However, the opposition maintains that in practice Netanyahu and his allies continue to guarantee control over the courts with the latest changes, so in principle no changes are expected in the mobilizations announced for the coming days.
