Israeli seriously injured in attack in Huwara

Magen David Adom emergency services said his wife was in shock. Israeli media reported that three children were also in the vehicle. The attacker fired about 20 shots at the car. After a short pursuit, Israeli security forces were able to apprehend and take out the suspect.

According to the military, the vehicle was fired at in the small Palestinian town of Huwara – not far from where two Israeli brothers were killed in an attack by a Palestinian in the town of Huwara last month. Then, on February 26, Israeli settlers rioted and set fire to houses, shops and cars. Dozens of Palestinian residents were injured.

Far-right Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, who is also responsible for settlement development in the West Bank, called on the state to “eradicate” Huwara. He later distanced himself from these statements. A central road runs through Huwara and is used daily by many Israeli settlers in the northern West Bank.

The new attack came as officials from both sides met in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to curb the violence. The latest attack also took place during such a meeting in the Jordanian port city of Aqaba. Government officials from the United States, Jordan and Egypt also participated in the talks.

The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has long been tense. Since the beginning of the year, 13 Israelis and a Ukrainian have been killed in Palestinian attacks. During the same period, 85 Palestinians were killed – for example in clashes with the Israeli army or in their own attacks. There are fears of a further escalation of violence during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, which starts this week.
