A group of five missing women has fallen victim to a murder in Mexico. The cremated remains of the women’s bones were positively identified. Moreover, according to their own statements, the researchers have no doubt that a sixth woman has also died. The attorney general of the central state of Guanajuato, Carlos Zamarripa, announced this on Friday. Although the North American country kills an average of nearly 90 people a day, this case attracted particular attention because so many women rarely disappear at once.
According to Zamarripa, the police have arrested six suspects, who were found with weapons and drugs. The motive and precise circumstances of the crime were initially unknown. According to local media reports, the later victims were hired to work at a party before disappearing.
The women, aged between 19 and 48, were last seen on March 7 in the city of Celaya. Her remains were found 30 kilometers away in the municipality of Juventino Rosas. Criminal gangs are active in the region. Experts are still working to identify additional bone fragments, Zamarripa said.
A wave of violence has been raging in Mexico for years. Last year there were 31,936 homicides per 126 million inhabitants – and that’s just the official figure. Numerous drug cartels and other criminal groups vie for control of areas of influence and smuggling routes. They often have ties to corrupt politicians and security forces. Most murders are never solved. (SDA)
