Putin installs huge anti-aircraft ring in Moscow

Army troops are currently clearing large areas of forest around the Russian capital Moscow. Protected forests are also being cleared to make way for air defense systems. These are located in and around Moscow, sometimes right next to residential buildings. The city is increasingly resembling a military facility, despite being several hundred miles from the war front.

The reason for the increasing militarization is apparently the growing fear of attacks on Moscow. This is reported by the Russian independent portal «The Insider».

Among other things, “The Insider” has published aerial photos of the Russian capital showing the new defense systems in detail. The suspicion: Vladimir Putin (70) is preparing for a possible attack.

According to the report, on Dec. 31, the Russians began massively creating space for air defense systems. Local residents report that 100 hectares of forest, about the size of 140 football fields, have been destroyed in the protection zone of a museum reserve alone.

The military faces a difficult choice

Fear of attacks is also visible within Moscow. In a residential area, there are S-400 surface-to-air missile systems. “I’ve always wanted a potential enemy target next to my house!” scolds a local resident.

Short-range anti-aircraft missile systems have been installed in the city center for several weeks – even on roofs. Installing such devices in the city center without martial law “is against safety regulations,” Ukrainian military expert Alexander Kovalenko told The Insider. It also poses a risk to the public.

But Kovalenko also knows that the Kremlin is in a tight spot. The army cannot defend the entire urban area. “When it comes to protecting Moscow, the army faces a difficult decision,” the expert explains. Either the army concentrates on the defense of the center – or protects the entire city area, but much less effectively.

It remains to be seen whether Ukraine plans an attack on Moscow. However, a few weeks ago, a Ukrainian drone crashed just a few kilometers from Moscow. The signal from the Ukrainians is clear: even the Russian capital, hundreds of kilometers from the front, is within attack range. (lia)
