The Russian offensive in Ukraine stalls. The troops would run out of air. This is the conclusion of the American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in its latest report.
According to the ISW, this is probably because after the bloody fighting, Russia has few soldiers and too little equipment to continue the offensive at the same pace as before. These problems run across the entire front.
Oleksi Dmitrashkivsky, a spokesman for the Ukrainian armed forces, said on Wednesday that Russian attacks had declined sharply over the past week. Ground attacks have dropped from 90 to 100 per day to 20 to 30.
In recent weeks, Russian troops have made minor successes around the hard-fought city of Bakhmut. So they took the village of Soledar and invaded the eastern part of Bakhmut. But there, too, the attacks by the Wagner mercenaries seem to have reached their peak, say the military experts of the ISW. The attacks have decreased considerably in recent days, it is said.
Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozchin (61) recently complained repeatedly that his troops were not getting enough ammunition. In the dispute with the Russian Defense Ministry, he even threatened to withdraw his fighters from the region.
In recent days, Wagner forces have apparently concentrated on lighter attacks – capturing small, barely defended villages around Bakhmut. However, according to the ISW researchers, this does not increase the chances of a complete capture of Bachmut.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) assumes that Russia no longer has much to do in the war against Ukraine. Arms deliveries and other aid “are particularly important now that it is felt that Russian aggression is approaching the point where it can break,” he said in a video address on Wednesday evening.
Selenski also addressed the decisions made at another meeting of the so-called Ramstein format on Wednesday. This format coordinates arms deliveries to Kiev – named after the US air base at Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, where several meetings with Ukraine take place. The supply of ammunition and anti-aircraft weapons had been decided, he said.
Reports of ammunition shortages had piled up on both sides, including the Ukrainian defenses. (two)
